The EU agrees in principle to more charging stations for vehicles

The Council of the European Union (EU) and the European Parliament (EP) reached an agreement on Tuesday to increase the number of charging points for electric vehicles by 2030 and the supply of hydrogen.

The political agreement – which will have to be formally endorsed by the European co-legislators – will allow the creation of alternative fuels infrastructure for road transport, for the supply of electricity from the land network in maritime and inland ports and for the supply of electrically parked airplanes.

The agreed legislation also stipulates that operators “must ensure full price transparency, offer a specific common payment method, such as debit or credit card, and make relevant data, such as location information, available electronically, so that the customer has full information “said a statement.

The public network of electric filling stations should keep pace with the growth of the market for electric and hybrid vehicles, as for each battery electric car registered in a Member State, 1.3 kW of power must be supplied through an infrastructure charging station accessible to the public .

In addition, from 2025, a fast charging station of at least 150 kW must be installed on every 60 km section of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).

On the other hand, from 2025, heavy vehicle charging stations should be installed every 60 km along the main TEN-T network and every 100 km on the largest global TEN-T network, covering the entire network by 2030.

With regard to hydrogen, from 2030, a refueling infrastructure should be installed in all urban nodes and every 200 km along the TEN-T core network, capable of serving both cars and trucks, so that there is a sufficient hydrogen density network for hydrogen vehicles to circulate all over the city European Union.

Ports with more than 50 port calls by large passenger ships, or 100 port calls by container ships, must be able to supply electricity from the shore network to these ships by 2030.

With regard to airports, it is necessary to ensure that parked aircraft are supplied with electricity at all contact positions (doors) by 2025 and at all remote positions (outside positions) by 2030.

The legislation proposed by the European Commission and approved on Tuesday is part of the European Green Deal, the EU’s long-term growth strategy to make Europe climate neutral by 2050.

To meet this target by 2030, Europe must reduce its emissions by at least 55% compared to 1990 levels.
