US and Russia to stop sharing nuclear information every two years

The US and the Russian Federation ended the biennial routine of sharing information about their nuclear weapons as stipulated in the New START treaty, the last arms control pact between those states.

The information was put forth by US leaders on Tuesday.

Officials in President Joe Biden’s administration at the White House, the Pentagon and the State Department said the US was ready to continue providing this information to the Russian Federation even after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced last month that it would participate in the treaty suspended. but Moscow informed Washington that it would not share any more information.

“Due to the Russian Federation’s non-compliance with treaty obligations, the US will also not provide its semi-annual information to the Russian Federation to encourage the Russian Federation to return to treaty compliance,” the spokesman for the agency said. Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Vedant Patel, to journalists.

The White House, which has accused the Kremlin of multiple treaty violations, said Russia’s refusal to comply was “legally void” and that the decision to withhold nuclear information was another violation.

Despite the extension shortly after Joe Biden took office in January 2021, New START has been subject to severe testing since the beginning of the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine and has been on a ventilator for more than a month since Putin announced he would no longer comply with the provision.

The treaty, which then-Presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev signed in 2010, limits each state to a maximum of 1,550 warheads and 700 bombers. The agreement also includes extensive inspections of nuclear installations to verify compliance with the agreement.

However, no inspections have been carried out since 2020 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Talks on the restart were supposed to start in November 2022, but the Russian Federation canceled them, citing US support for Ukraine.

In February, Moscow formally suspended its participation in the treaty.
