As heads of state from around the world speak at the United Nations General Assembly, Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a long-awaited speech. A speech all the more important since it came after Vladimir Putin’s announcements about the mobilization of Russian reservists to go fight in the Ukraine.
“A crime has been committed against Ukraine and we demand just punishment,” he said, addressing himself via video message.
A critique of “neutrality”
Among the sanctions imagined by the Ukrainian president, we find the establishment of a special court against Moscow, in order to rule on war crimes committed in Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelensky did not hesitate to mention various examples of these crimes.
Apart from the court, the head of state also considered that Russia should be stripped of its veto right in the Security Council. A proposal that arises when the United States and France have proposed a reform of the Security Council. Instead, Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron were considering increasing the number of countries sitting in this institution.
Like Emmanuel Macron, Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the countries that claim “neutrality” in the conflict. “In reality, they only protect their own interests,” the Ukrainian president attacked. “Russia will be forced to end this war, a war that it started,” he said.
