King Charles III arrived in Berlin this Wednesday for his first official foreign visit as monarch of the United Kingdom.
The trip, which will last several days, is designed to strengthen the UK’s relations with the European Union, after six years of debates over Brexit, and to emphasize the connection between the countries, in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The initial plan for the visit started with a visit to France, but the trip was canceled due to demonstrations against pension reform in the country.
On Thursday, the British monarch will address the German parliament, meet with the country’s chancellor Olaf Scholz, speak with Ukrainian refugees and meet British and German military personnel working on joint projects.
The trip was encouraged by the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, with the aim of strengthening the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union and facilitating future negotiations.
King Carlos III, aged 74, was proclaimed monarch immediately after the death of his mother, Isabel II, on September 8 last year, at the age of 96 and after 70 years of reign.
The monarch and queen consort, Camilla, will be crowned on May 6 at Westminster Abbey in a religious ceremony led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, leader of the Anglican Church.
