Pope Francis is “progressively improving” and, despite remaining in the hospital, has already returned to work, the Vatican announced Thursday.
“His Holiness Pope Francis rested well during the night. His clinical condition is progressively improving and the planned treatments continue. This morning, after breakfast, he read some newspapers and went back to work,” said the spokesman for the head of the Catholic Church, Matteo Bruni, quoted by the AFP agency.
On Wednesday, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis was admitted with a respiratory infection and will have to stay “for a few days” in the hospital.
The Pope had part of a lung removed when he was young due to a respiratory infection, which explains his almost whispering way of speaking.
Medical sources explained that the oxygen levels in the Pope’s blood are fine and that he has undergone the necessary tests to rule out more serious health problems.
In a recent interview with the US news agency Associated Press, Francisco revealed that he had suffered from diverticulitis again, the problem that led him to undergo surgery in 2021 in which part of his colon was removed, but he was in good condition. health.
Since then, his only visible health problem is in his right knee, which forces him to use a wheelchair, having stated on several occasions that he does not want to undergo surgery, due to the negative reaction he had to the anesthesia in the hospital. surgery 2021. .
Francis has already said he could resign, as his predecessor Benedict XVI did, if his health prevents him from continuing his work.
In this sense, the Pope revealed, in December 2022, that he signed a letter of resignation to be used in the event that he cannot fulfill his duties for health reasons.
