215 prisoners exchanged overnight
Ukraine announced on the night of Wednesday to Thursday the exchange with Russia of 215 soldiers, including defense chiefs of the Azovstal steelworks in the city of Mariupol, a symbol of resistance to the Russian invasion. This is the biggest exchange since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February, the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration Andriï Yermak said on television.
Russia has recovered 55 prisoners, including former deputy Viktor Medvedchuk, a close friend of Vladimir Putin, charged with high treason in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his daily address.
Zelensky demands “just punishment” against Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded “just punishment” against Russia on Wednesday at the UN and called for the establishment of a special court. “A crime has been committed against Ukraine and we demand just punishment” against Russia, President Zelensky said as he addressed the UN General Assembly via video message.
This speech followed Vladimir Putin’s announcements in the morning, threatening the West with an armed escalation and announcing the partial mobilization of at least 300,000 men.
