Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re announced that Pope Francis will be dismissed tomorrow and will preside over Easter celebrations, Adnkronos suggests.
“Based on the information I have, the Pope will leave the hospital tomorrow so that he can preside over all Holy Week rituals,” said the dean of the College of Cardinals, explaining that he will be accompanied by a cardinal celebrant who will be in charge of the duties at the altar.
According to RAI, the pope would like to leave the hospital on Saturday, but the doctors have not yet given that guarantee.
Pope Francis spent a restful night and is seeing a marked improvement in his health, a Vatican source said this Friday morning.
The head of the Catholic Church, aged 86, has been admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital suffering from acute bronchitis that required the administration of antibiotics, the medical team clarified on Thursday. The treatment resulted in a “marked improvement in his state of health”, so the pope is expected to be able to return home to the Vatican “in the coming days”. However, he will not preside over Easter celebrations.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, had already announced that he would be the one to celebrate Easter Mass, but that the Pope would have to be present in St. Peter’s Basilica and deliver the Urbi et Orbi message.
On Thursday, Francisco felt well enough to eat, pray and work in the private room he occupies on the tenth floor of the hospital. “Last night was also peaceful,” said a Vatican source.
