Faced with the Russian “escalation”, Emmanuel Macron prefers moderation. On the plane that brought him back from the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, the President of the Republic granted an exclusive interview to BFMTV, returning in particular to the issue of nuclear weapons.
US President Joe Biden recalled this Wednesday at the United Nations General Assembly that a “nuclear war cannot be won and should never be fought.” A line in which Emmanuel Macron fits, who emphasizes that it is the “very principle of deterrence”.
“Reasonable nuclear power”
After deploring Russia’s “isolation” at the diplomatic level and Vladimir Putin’s “belligerent speech” on Moscow’s weapons capabilities, the French head of state insisted on recalling the French line.
“France is a reasonable nuclear power that has a doctrine that I have been able to explain in the past,” he said into the microphone of our journalist Ulysse Gosset. “In general, it’s never good to do political fiction, especially on this subject because you get caught up in an escalation of saying ‘if this happens, then I’ll do this.’
Instead of entering into this form of escalation, Emmanuel Macron recalled during this interview that “we have our credibility” on nuclear weapons and assured that “France is a great power, both diplomatic and military.”
He also assured that the French objective remains unchanged: that Ukraine can resist and recover its sovereignty, thanks to “a negotiated peace” with Russia.
