Trump will speak in Florida the same day he goes to court in New York

Former US President Donald Trump, indicted in New York, announced that he will make a statement from Florida on Tuesday, the day he is due to appear in court in Manhattan.

Trump “will deliver a speech at Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach” at 8:15 p.m. (4:47 a.m. in Lisbon) this Tuesday, his office said in a statement, as he prepares for “a battle” according to lawyers .

In an unprecedented move in US history, the 76-year-old Republican was charged in a case related to a payment of $130,000 (120,000 euros) made to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016.

The charges will be made public on Tuesday.

The billionaire denounced a “false and shameful” accusation, part of a “witch hunt”.

On Sunday, the lawyers continued the media attack, saying they were confident a judge would throw out the case.

“This case is not even legally correct. In fact, it is a joke. It will not survive a challenge in court,” one of the lawyers, Joe Tacopina, told ABC television.

“I think a fair judge would probably recognize that something is fundamentally wrong, that we are crossing the Rubicon with this political persecution,” another Trump lawyer, James Trusty, told Fox.

“And I happily suspect that the prosecution will be legally fragile, and the opportunity will arise for a judge to do the right thing,” he added.

Meanwhile, the former president is “preparing for battle,” Tacopina said.

Both lawyers reiterated that Donald Trump, who is seeking to run for president again after losing the 2020 election, was being impeached for political reasons.

“If he wasn’t a presidential candidate, he wouldn’t have been charged,” Joe Tacopina told CNN.

According to the US media, the Republican should leave his residence in Florida on Monday to go to New York.

On Tuesday, he is due to appear in a Manhattan court to be formally notified of the charges.

“This is an absolute abuse of power. He is a tough guy (…), and someone who is going to be ready for this battle,” Tacopina added to ABC.

On Friday, Trump announced that he had raised four million dollars (3.7 million euros) in 24 hours for the campaign, after the accusation.

Tuesday’s indictment will have an unprecedented ritual for a former head of state: the billionaire must declare his name, age, occupation, undergo fingerprinting and take a photograph, as is the case with all the defendants.
