A hard blow to the terrorist organization. A leader of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, responsible for attacks in Europe, was killed Tuesday in a US attack in Syria, the US military command for the Middle East (Centcom) announced.
Khaled Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri is notably “responsible for the planning of IS attacks in Europe”, I indicated to Centcom in a communiqué, soulignant that he died allait “temporarily disrupting the organization’s capacity to promote attacks abroad”.
“ISIS continues to pose a threat”
The US military command did not specify where the attack took place in Syria, but said no civilians were killed or injured in the attack.
“ISIS continues to pose a threat to the region and beyond,” the head of the US military command for the Middle East, General Michael Kurilla, was quoted as saying in the press release. “Even weakened, the group is still capable of conducting operations in the region, with a willingness to strike beyond the Middle East.”
Since the territorial defeat of IS in Syria in 2019, several hundred US soldiers, deployed in the northeast of the country as part of the anti-jihadist coalition, continue to fight with the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and to target suspected ISIS members.
In October 2019, the United States announced the death of IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi during a US operation in northwestern Syria.
