Mozambique Airlines plane undergoes depressurization

A Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) aircraft suffered a depressurization on Monday when it left Maputo for Chimoio, the company announced in a note distributed to the media.

The depressurization of the aircraft “caused the release of oxygen masks” but they were not used by the passengers, the company said in the document, without mentioning the number of people on board.

The incident was “controlled” by the crew and flight TM110, operated by the subsidiary MEX-Mozambique Expresso, continued to Chimoio, in the center of the country, where it “landed safely and the passengers disembarked normally,” it said.

LAM apologized for the incident and said it was working with MEX and the Mozambique Civil Aviation Institute to understand the causes of the depressurization.

“Security is always a priority for the company and its partners and everything possible will be done to understand and prevent such occurrences,” he concluded.

The Mozambican state airline has faced operational problems in recent years related to a reduced fleet and lack of investment and, just earlier this month, the company announced the unavailability of its four aircraft due to the need for “maintenance”.

The worst accident LAM suffered occurred in November 2013, when an Embraer, which was on the Maputo-Luanda route, crashed in Namibia, killing all 33 occupants.

The Namibian Ministry of Works and Transport, which was responsible for the investigation at the time, excluded mechanical failures in its report and concluded that the commander of flight TM-470, Hermínio dos Santos Fernandes, intentionally crashed the aircraft, killing all 33. occupants, including six Portuguese.
