The “terrorist” character of the Russian Wagner group debated in the National Assembly on May 9

The motion for a resolution presented by the renaissance deputy Benjamin Haddad will request the inclusion of the Russian group Wagner in the list of terrorist organizations of the European Union.

A text requesting the inclusion of the Russian paramilitary group Wagner in the list of terrorist organizations of the European Union will be examined on May 9 by the National Assembly, according to its official agenda published on Tuesday.

The motion for a resolution presented by the renaissance deputy Benjamin Haddad, without binding force, cites the “many atrocities against the civilian population” in Ukraine committed by this group, some of which can be classified as “war crimes”.

Signatories of various groups

The text will be signed by deputies from the various majority groups, but also from the ranks of the opposition, Haddad told AFP, specifying that elected representatives from LR, PS and environmental groups would be among the signatories.

“It is about sending a political, symbolic message, a signal to denounce Wagner and his activities, which deliberately target civilians for political purposes, such as terrorism,” he argued.

In mid-March, the Lithuanian parliament has already adopted a resolution stating that “Wagner is a terrorist organization”, arousing the appreciation of Kyiv.

French lawmakers have already shown their support for Ukraine by adopting a resolution last week recognizing the Holodomor, the famine caused in the early 1930s in Ukraine by Soviet authorities, as genocide.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked them for this gesture, which aroused strong expectations in kyiv over the painful memory of this murderous famine, revived by the Russian invasion of the country.

Russia, for its part, had responded by decrying an “anti-Russian zeal” by the French National Assembly, “all the more disgusting since France itself has not yet closed the page on its crimes of the colonial period.”
