Peter Murrell, husband of former Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon, was arrested on Wednesday as part of an investigation into the finances of the Scottish National Party (SNP), according to British media.
In a statement, Scottish police said they had detained a 58-year-old man for questioning about the party’s “funding and finances”. “Searches are being carried out as part of the investigation,” police added, without identifying the detainee.
The BBC indicates there is “police activity” at the couple’s home in Glasgow and at party headquarters in Edinburgh.
The British public service channel and other media report that Murrell is having problems with some £600,000 in donations to the party, which are reportedly not on the party’s accounts.
In March, the husband of the former head of the Scottish government resigned as head of the Scottish National Party.
It should be noted that Nicola Sturgeon stepped down as Prime Minister of Scotland last February.
