The Polish Minister of Agriculture, Henryk Kowalczyk, resigned on Wednesday after protests by farmers over the importation of grain from Ukraine.
Domestic producers say market prices are falling due to the duty-free import of Ukrainian grains, a measure the European Union (EU) intends to extend, and demand measures to protect domestic production.
The recent EU announcement “shows very clearly that the European Commission will not grant this basic demand of farmers,” said Henryk Kowalczyk.
This was the day that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Poland for his first official visit to the country.
The Ukrainian leader will meet with his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda, and with the Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, to discuss security, international and economic relations, including agreements on the import of cereals and other food products.
