War in Ukraine: Emmanuel Macron and Xi Jinping reaffirm their opposition to the use of nuclear weapons

The presidents of France, Emmanuel Macron, and the president of China, Xi Jinping, on Thursday called for peace talks as soon as possible to end the conflict in Ukraine, also rejecting any use of nuclear weapons.

We need “a resumption of discussions as soon as possible to build a lasting peace”, the French head of state particularly advocated, while his Chinese counterpart considered that “nuclear weapons cannot be used” and condemned any “attack against civilians”. in joint statements after a bilateral meeting in Beijing.

Nuclear weapons in Belarus

The Chinese head of state condemned any “use of biological and chemical weapons, under any circumstances.” For his part, Emmanuel Macron recalled that “nuclear energy must obviously be completely excluded from this conflict.”

“In this regard, all should be reminded of their duties, in particular Russia, which announced the other day that it wanted to deploy these types of weapons in Belarus, which is not in accordance with the commitments made to you, to us and to international law”, he added, in statements to the press, at the end of their meeting.

Emmanuel Macron told his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, that he was counting on him to “bring sense to Russia” over Ukraine, and both leaders called for peace talks.
