USA: Mountaineer dies saving climbing partner’s life in frozen waterfall

The 41-year-old victim lost his life while climbing a frozen waterfall on April 2 in Utah. A third person fell ten meters.

Meg O’Neil, 41, died on April 2 while pulling her climbing partner to safety while the two were climbing a frozen waterfall in Utah, US, reports The Guardian.

“A climber pushed his 21-year-old climbing partner off the trail, which likely saved his life. (…) Unfortunately, the climber who pushed his partner off the ice collapsed and was pinned under two large boulders. of ice and did not survive,” the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook.

It was the 21-year-old mountaineer, whose life was narrowly saved, who was able to return to the mainland and contact the emergency services, warning them that a column of ice was collapsing. A third 34-year-old man, who was accompanying the two climbers, fell about 12 meters. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Search and rescue teams took turns for many hours to find the victim’s body, CBS reports.
