Former Russian footballer and coach Alexandr Kerzhakov, who moved to Dubai late last year, spoke out against the Russian military intervention in Ukraine on Friday, saying it is something he does not understand.
“I don’t understand how this is possible. That in a modern and developed society what happens can happen”said Alexandr Kerzhakov, 40 years old, Russian top scorer, with 233 goals and 90 caps for the senior national team.
Kerzhakov, who moved to Dubai at the end of last year, admitted in an interview that every day he better understands “the magnitude” of the problem that erupted on February 24, 2022, with the start of the Russian military campaign in Ukraine and that he is afraid.
“When I was asked in every interview what my greatest wish was, all I asked was that there would be no war. In the world as a whole”emphasized the former player of Zenit, Sevilla (Spain), Dinamo Moscow and FC Zurich (Switzerland).
This situation, which Kerzhakov says he cannot explain or find answers to, has led him to leave Russia, although he insists that it is not a matter of flight or permanent emigration, but of temporary departure and his homeland for leave for a while.
Kerzhakov believes that those in favor of military intervention will no longer change their mind, as “too much time” has passed, although he believes it is more dangerous that there are Russians who have no opinion and are simply trying to to survive .
