A bear attacked and killed a runner in a forest in northwestern Italy, the first case of its kind, a source close to the case told AFP.
Andrea Papi, 26, was killed on Wednesday in the mountainous region of Trentino, near his village of Caldes, the source said.
The victim’s family raised the alarm when he did not return from the flight. Later, a rescue team found his body in the night.
Andrea Papi suffered deep wounds to his neck, arms and chest and an autopsy performed on Friday concluded that he had been attacked by a bear.
In March, a man had already been attacked by a bear in the same region, sparking a debate about the dangers of these animals.
The local government decided to find and kill the animal, said the president of the Trentino region, Maurizio Fugatti.
Annamaria Procacci, a former deputy ecologist who now works with the animal welfare group ENPA, denounced the local authorities’ lack of precautions.
