Doctors say Berlusconi is steadily improving

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, hospitalized for leukemia and a lung infection, is gradually improving, doctors said Monday, expressing “cautious optimism” about the health of the politician and magnate.

The 86-year-old media magnate has been admitted to the intensive care unit of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan since Wednesday.

“Over the past 48 hours, there has been progressive and steady improvement in the function of the controlled organs,” their doctors said in a press release.

The treatment is delivering “the expected results, which allows us to be cautiously optimistic,” health professionals said.

Doctors revealed on Thursday that Berlusconi was being treated for a lung infection and was suffering from chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), a rare blood cancer that mainly affects older adults.

Berlusconi, one of the peninsula’s richest men with a fortune estimated by Forbes at $6.4 billion, has been in and out of hospital in recent years.

Last month, the billionaire spent four days in the same hospital and was discharged a week ago.

Silvio Berlusconi entered politics in 1994 and was prime minister for a total of nine years. Despite a series of sexual scandals and lawsuits that tarnished his image, he has held a special place in the hearts of many Italians.
