Russia says military exercises in Taiwan are China’s ‘sovereign right’

Russia has declared its full support for China’s military exercises around Taiwan, which ended on Monday, saying Beijing has been the victim of many “provocative” actions.

“In a very short time, we have witnessed many provocative actions against the People’s Republic of China,” said the spokesman for the Kremlin (Russian Presidency), Dmitry Peskov, in his usual daily telephone press conference.

“And, of course, China has the sovereign right to respond to these provocative actions in various ways, including military exercises in strict accordance with international law,” the Russian spokesman stressed.

Peskov added that “everyone must respect the right of China, as well as other countries, to act in this way.”

China announced on Monday that it has “successfully concluded” the military exercises around Taiwan, which began on Saturday in response to last Wednesday’s meeting in California between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and the House leader. of United States Representatives. , Republican Kevin McCarthy.

At the end of World War II, Taiwan became part of the Republic of China under Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist government.

After the defeat against the Communist Party, in the Chinese Civil War, in 1949, the Nationalist Government took refuge on the island, which maintains, to this day, the official name of the Republic of China, in opposition to the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese mainland.

Beijing considers the island part of its territory and threatens reunification by force if Taipei formally declares its independence.
