Tesla sued for sharing customer photos captured by car cameras

Tesla is the subject of a class action complaint for invasion of privacy, following revelations that employees internally share sensitive images captured by cameras installed in the electric car brand’s vehicles.

Elon Musk’s commercial vehicles are equipped with multiple sensors, including cameras, to guide fitness aid tools, highlights the complaint filed Friday by Henry Yeh, owner of a Model Y in California, and consulted on Monday by the France news agency -Presse (AFP).

Employees accessed the images “not for the stated purpose of communicating, providing services and improving Tesla’s power systems,” the complaint states.

But “for the tasteless and criminal entertainment of Tesla employees and possibly people outside the company,” adds the document, which is based on testimony reported by Reuters on Thursday.

Employees have released “recordings of Tesla customers in private and embarrassing situations, such as the video of a man approaching a Tesla car completely naked, videos of accidents or aggression on the road,” the whistleblowers accuse.

It is also possible to trace where the videos were taken, making it possible to identify the owner of the vehicle, contrary to what the company claims, the complaint also highlights.

The plaintiff, who accuses Tesla of, among other things, invasion of privacy, violation of consumer rights, breach of contract and negligence, is claiming damages.

Tesla did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment.
