The South Korean government announced this Friday that, as of Monday, the use of masks outdoors is no longer mandatory, removing one more measure to control Covid-19.
Currently, the Asian country maintains the obligation to wear masks outdoors in meetings or events with 50 or more people, under penalty of fines for offenders, an imposition that will end as of the 26th.
“We are clearly going through a critical time for the resurgence of Covid-19,” South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo told a news conference, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.
As such, mandatory wearing of a face mask indoors will remain in place, in anticipation of the seasonal flu season and a possible resurgence of Covid-19 cases, Han said.
In May, South Korea dropped the requirement to wear a mask outdoors in most situations, but kept the measure in place for concerts, sporting events, rallies and other outdoor group activities.
Since the start of the pandemic, South Korea has recorded more than 28,000 deaths and more than 24 million cases of the disease.
