Ukraine: Russia tests intercontinental ballistic missiles

The Russian defense ministry announced on Wednesday that it has launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from a military base in the south of the country, less than 500 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

“On April 11, 2023, a Strategic Missile Forces combat team successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from a land-based mobile missile system” at the foot of Kapustin Yar, in the Astrakhan region, the statement reads.

The ministry indicated that the purpose of the launch was to test advanced combat equipment, confirm the accuracy of the flight path design and the technical solutions used in the development of new missile systems.

The same note said that “the launch was completed in its entirety,” after the missile, launched near the Caspian Sea, reached its target, at a military training camp in Sary Shagan, Kazakhstan, about 2,000 miles away. from a distance.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 sparked a war that plunged Europe into the worst security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

Ukraine relies on its Western allies to supply it with weapons to fight Russian troops.

Kiev’s allies have also imposed successive economic sanctions on Moscow to try to reduce Russia’s ability to fund Ukraine’s war effort.
