Canada targeted by pro-Russian cyberattack during Ukrainian PM’s visit

The Government of Canada was the object of a cyberattack, claimed by pro-Russian hackers, during the visit of the Ukrainian prime minister, according to what the head of the Canadian Executive, Justin Trudeau, said on Tuesday, assuring that “in no way affect support for Ukraine “.

The attack claimed by the NoName group on the Telegram social network paralyzed several official ‘sites’ for a few hours this Tuesday morning.

Among the ‘sites’ affected were the head of state and the Senate, in an action that took place while Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal was meeting with Trudeau in Toronto.

“It is not uncommon for Russian ‘hackers’ to target countries that show their unwavering support for Ukraine, that receive Ukrainian delegations or Ukrainian leaders, so the timing is not surprising,” the Canadian government leader stressed during a joint press conference. . with Shmyhal.

Robyn Hawco, a spokeswoman for Canada’s electronic surveillance agency, noted that it is “not uncommon” for denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to occur against countries that receive visits from members of the Ukrainian government.

“While these incidents draw attention, they have very little impact on the systems involved,” the official said.

The Ukrainian prime minister, who plans to travel to Washington soon, and Trudeau, announced on Tuesday the conclusion of negotiations aimed at modernizing the free trade agreement between the two countries, new Canadian arms and ammunition deliveries to Ukraine, as well as an agreement with Canadian company Cameco to supply Ukraine with nuclear fuel until 2035.

Ottawa also issued new sanctions against Russians and Russian entities, including those linked to the Wagner paramilitary group and the Russian aviation sector, as well as the Belarusian financial sector.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion — justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security — was condemned by the broader international community, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing on Russia from political and economic sanctions.
