Russia revokes Portuguese honorary consul’s credentials

Russia revoked the credentials of the Portuguese honorary consul Acácio Durães in Nizhny Novgorod. The news was brought forward by SIC Notícias and confirmed to Lusa by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The consul Acácio Durães, contacted by the news channel, said that no explanation had been given to him, but the revocation of credentials will be related to retaliation, after Bruno Valverde Coto also lost the Portuguese government’s permission to exercise functions as honorary consul of Russia in Faroallegedly for granting ‘golden visas’ in the context of its real estate business.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that last January the ‘exéquatur’ of the Honorary Consul of Russia in the Algarve was revoked for carrying out activities inconsistent with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations”said Portuguese diplomacy in a note to Lusa.

According to the Diplomático Portal, honorary consuls have “functions to defend the rights and interests of the Portuguese state and its nationals”, but are not authorized to carry out consular acts.

“However, in certain exceptional and justified circumstances, honorary consuls may be authorized to perform voter registrations, civil and notarial deeds, and issue travel documents,” it adds.
