The Russian Federation withdrew the credentials of the Portuguese honorary consul in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, Acácio Durães.
TO The news is advanced by SIC Notíciasfrom whom Durães said he had not received any explanation of what happened from Moscow, and was confirmed to TSF by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Earlier this year, Gomes Cravinho’s ministry withdrew the accreditation of Russia’s honorary consul in the Algarve, Bruno Valverde Cota.
Portuguese diplomacy justified the decision with the practice, by the businessman, of activities that would not be in accordance with the Vienna Convention.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that, last January, the exequatur to the honorary consul of Russia in the Algarve for carrying out activities that are not in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations”, said the Portuguese diplomacy in a note to Lusa.
According to the Diplomatic Portal, honorary consuls “have functions of defending the rights and interests of the Portuguese State and its nationals”, but they are not competent to carry out consular acts.
“However, in certain exceptional and substantiated circumstances, honorary consuls may be authorized to carry out voter registration operations, civil and notarial registry acts and issuance of travel documents,” it adds.
