At least three dead and dozens injured in clashes in Sudan

At least three civilians were killed today and dozens injured in armed clashes between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group and the Sudanese army, the Sudanese Doctors Union said.

The union verified that at least two citizens died at the Khartoum airport, the largest in Sudan, and another was shot in Al Obeid, in the south of the African country, according to the first preliminary report on the clashes, quoted by the Spanish media. . EFE agency. .

Advanced information also shows that an officer of the Armed Forces was wounded in the city of Omdurman, neighboring Khartoum, and three civilians were shot in the neck and leg in the south of the capital and east of the Nile.

These are the first victims since the clashes between RSF and the Army began this morning, with, according to the Doctors’ Union, “dozens of injuries reported so far, including unstable wounded.”

RSF accused the Sudanese army of launching an action against one of its bases in Khartoum, while the Armed Forces claimed that it was carried out in response to an attack that paramilitaries had carried out earlier in Khartoum.

These clashes come two days after the Army warned that the country is going through a “dangerous situation”, which could lead to an armed conflict, due to the mobilization of RSF in the Sudanese capital and in other cities without consent or coordination. of the Armed Forces.

This mobilization took place in the course of negotiations to reach a final political agreement that would end the 2021 coup and lead Sudan to a democratic transition.

The signing of the pact has already been postponed twice, this April, precisely because of the tensions and rivalries between the Army and the RSF.

The Rapid Support Forces emerged from the Yanyawid militias, accused of committing crimes against humanity during the Darfur conflict (2003-2008), and are led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias Hemedti, considered the most powerful man in Sudan.
