Four migrants and a suspected human trafficker, all Syrians, were killed in a road accident when their car drove the wrong way on a Greek highway near the Turkish border, police said.
The driver of the other car, a 46-year-old Greek, was also killed in the collision and six other people were injured.
The car, carrying the driver and 10 other passengers, some of whom hid in the trunk, was traveling along an older road away from the border when it came across a police checkpoint near the town of Alexandroupolis on Saturday morning.
He was signaled to stop, accelerated and collided with the patrol car. Police say they chased the car from a distance.
The alleged trafficker, who was driving the vehicle, was driving onto one of Greece’s major highways when it collided head-on with another car. Police said the drivers died instantly, as well as a man in the car transporting the migrants and a girl who sat on another migrant’s lap in the passenger seat. Two others died in a hospital.
