Navalny calls for the release of the former president of Georgia

Alexei Navalny launched, from prison, an appeal for the release of the former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, who is trapped in a Tblisi hospital and his life is in danger. The Russian opponent asked that Saakashvili be transferred to Poland because he has no doubt that in Georgia he will end up dying.

The latest images released in February show Mikheil Saakashvili very thin, aged, confused and unrecognizable compared to the images when he was arrested. A recent report, by several independent specialists, guarantees that the former president’s state of health has seriously deteriorated and, soon, the organs may begin to suffer irreversible damage.

The former head of state currently weighs 60 kilos, half the weight he had in 2021. Mikheil Saakashvili was president of Georgia between 2004 and 2013 and is considered the instigator of the Rose Revolution, which removed Eduard Shevardnadze, former minister of the Soviet governments.

Mikheil Saakashvili was praised by the West as an example for the former countries of the East to follow. After leaving the presidency, the opposition seized power and brought the country closer to Russia.

The former president was eventually convicted of abuse of power and arrested when he returned to Georgia. A few years ago he was threatened with death by Vladimir Putin.
