“We have similar views,” Lavrov says of the Brazilian government

Serguei Lavrov said Russia and Brazil have “similar views” on the world in general and the conflict in Ukraine in particular. After a meeting in Brasilia with Mauro Vieira, the Brazilian foreign minister, the head of Russian diplomacy thanked “the contribution” of the government led by Lula da Silva “for a resolution of the conflict”.

“We are grateful for the contribution in seeking a solution to this conflict, this problem, we take this contribution into account and we must resolve the conflict in a sustainable way. The bilateral relationship will also be taken into account,” stated Lavrov.

“We discussed several relevant issues on the international and regional agenda, highlighting that Brazil’s and Russia’s approaches to problems currently in the world are similar,” he added. “The two countries are united by the desire to contribute to a more democratic and polycentric world order, based on the fundamental principle of state sovereignty and equality.”

Mauro Vieira underlined Brazil’s interest in a peaceful resolution of the war. “I strengthened Brazil’s willingness to contribute to the peaceful resolution of the conflict, recalling President Lula’s manifestations in the sense of facilitating the formation of a group of friendly countries to mediate in the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine I reiterated our position of a negotiated ceasefire, respecting humanitarian rights, and a negotiated solution for lasting peace”.

“I also reiterated Brazil’s position on the application of unilateral sanctions. Such measures not only have the approval of the United Nations Security Council, but also negatively affect economies around the world, especially in developing countries.”

The meeting came about after Lula’s statements about the war in Ukraine sparked unrest in the United States and Europe. Lula said North Americans and Europeans made decisions that he said prolonged the war. The recent visit of Brazil’s president to China was also the target of criticism in Washington.

Days earlier, Ukraine’s foreign ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said the country is grateful for Lula’s “efforts” to try to end the war in the region, but added that the country will not specify “one centimeter” country Russia. The statement came after Lula suggested Ukraine cede Crimea to Russia.
