Son of Mozambican opposition leader arrested after container permit

Authorities in Nampula, in northern Mozambique, have arrested a councilor and son of the country’s opposition leader on suspicion of irregularities in licensing a container to operate a shop, they said in a statement.

It concerns the permit for a commercial space of 13 square meters on a street in Nampula, where two were eventually established, with the prosecution alleging that Osvaldo Ossufo Momade has broken the law to prefer a permit applicant.

The prosecution justified the arrest with indications of “administrative acts without authority, deception of the mayor and obstruction of justice”, according to a statement from the Nampula Anti-Corruption Office.

The statement shows that the complaint came from another interested party in the license.

At stake are offenses of abuse of office or function, fraud and false statements or statements, he adds.

The detainee, a councilor for Economic Promotion, Markets and Stock Exchange Management in Nampula Municipality, was arrested Thursday and is the son of Ossufo Momade, chairman of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party in the country.

Lusa tried to get further clarification from the council and the party, but to no avail.

Nampula is one of the few municipalities in the country (out of 53 in total) controlled by the opposition: Renamo leads eight and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM, third party in parliament) has one, the majority of which is assigned to the Liberation Front of Mozambique Mozambique (Frelimo), the ruling party in the country.
