The Kremlin admitted that one of the objectives of the invasion of Ukraine was to prevent the country from joining NATO, a confession made on Thursday, the same day that the Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, was in Kiev.
The main spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed that keeping Kiev away from NATO is a priority objective of his regime.
“Otherwise, it would represent a serious danger to our country, to our security,” Peskov argued, quoted by the Interfax news agency.
The Kremlin does not accept the prospect of a hypothetical entry of Ukraine into NATO, an option that, for the moment, has not been officially considered.
Still, kyiv has asked for political and military help from the member countries of the Atlantic Alliance, claiming that the security of the member states is also at risk.
Stoltenberg arrived in Ukraine on Thursday, on a surprise visit, which is the first time the organization’s top official has visited.
NATO refrained from allowing the capture of any image of the Secretary General with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to prevent possible implications of this photo in the context of the war.
