NATO organizes the world’s largest cyber defense exercise in Estonia

More than 3,000 experts from 38 countries began the world’s largest cyber defense exercise on Wednesday, according to a statement from NATO’s Center of Excellence for Cyber Defense Cooperation (CCD CoE), based in the Estonian capital.

During the four days of the exercise, the participants “will protect systems against attacks in real time and will be trained in making tactical and strategic decisions in critical situations.”

In addition to defending the systems, “teams must report incidents, execute strategic decisions, and resolve medico-legal, legal, and media issues,” according to the statement.

“Last year showed us how important cyber defense is,” said Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur, quoted in the statement, referring to the conflict in Ukraine unleashed by the Russian invasion.

“Ukraine has strong digital skills, which means that its state can continue to provide essential digital services, even in times of war,” he added, stressing that “exercises like this (…) are essential for continued resilience.”
