Poland allows the transit of Ukrainian wheat again

Transit of Ukrainian grains and other agricultural products through Poland, which had been suspended by the Polish government for nearly a week, officially resumed on Friday, officials said.

Poland and other European Union countries bordering Ukraine have imposed temporary export bans on Ukrainian grains following farmers’ protests against falling prices.

Since the traditional export route to the Black Sea was blocked by the Russian invasion, Ukrainian grain has been exported via the European Union.

The transit through Poland of various food products, such as sugar, meat, fruits and vegetables, will be allowed again from Friday 02:00 (01:00 in Portugal) after the entry into force of a government regulation.

However, Ukrainian exporters cannot sell these products on the Polish market.

Poland on Saturday banned the entry of dozens of Ukrainian foodstuffs, mainly grains, in response to farmers’ protests.

The decision was taken without consulting Kiev or the European Commission, and drew criticism from both sides.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, grain reserves have accumulated in Poland, driving down local prices, sparking protests and causing a Polish minister of agriculture to resign.

Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria have imposed similar temporary bans.
