Guterres calls for more action to tackle climate change

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for more “climate action” and “massive investment” for the most vulnerable countries and communities this Saturday, Earth Day.

“Healthy ecosystems, from oceans and rivers to forests and grasslands, are also critical in our fight against climate change. We will work to implement the landmark UN Biodiversity Agreement to ensure that 30% of the Earth’s land and water will be protected by 2030,” Guterres said in a statement.

The official also called for “huge investments” for the most vulnerable countries and communities.

The UN Secretary-General believes that while governments should lead these changes, businesses and institutions as well as civil society have an important role to play.

“Our actions are devastating forests, jungles, farmland, wetlands, oceans, coral reefs, rivers, seas and lakes. Biodiversity is collapsing as one million species are on the brink of extinction. We must end this relentless and pointless wars against nature. We need to end these brutal and senseless wars against nature. We have the tools, the knowledge and the solutions. But we need to accelerate the pace,” he said.

The UN Secretary-General also exemplified the wisdom of indigenous communities and the “millennial care” they have for the environment.

He concluded the statement by calling on all people to “raise your voice” and demand that leaders protect the planet for current and future generations.
