UN Secretary General António Guterres on Monday called for respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and strongly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at a Security Council meeting chaired by Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
At the meeting called by Russia to discuss “effective multilateralism”, Guterres sat next to Lavrov and openly criticized Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, calling it a “violation of the United Nations (UN) Charter and of the right-wing international crisis”, which is causing enormous suffering and devastation to the country and its people, as well as severely shaking the world economy.
The former Portuguese Prime Minister reinforced that multilateral cooperation is the “beating heart of the United Nations”, as well as “its raison d’être and its guiding vision”.
