German authorities have arrested a Syrian man suspected of planning an explosives attack with Islamic extremist motives, official sources said on Tuesday.
Federal police said officers detained the 28-year-old man this morning in the northern city of Hamburg.
Investigators said the man was suspected of acquiring substances online that would allow him to produce an explosives belt “to carry out an attack on civilian targets”.
Police added that the man’s action was encouraged and supported by his 24-year-old brother, who lives in Kempten, a town in the south of the country. The men, whose names have not yet been released, are said to have “radical Islamic and jihadist” motives.
The authorities added that there is no information revealing the target where they planned the attack.
Police searches in Hamburg and Kempten seized several pieces of evidence, including chemicals, authorities said.
250 officers were involved in the entire operation.
