Just a few days after Vladimir Putin’s announcement that he would order the immediate mobilization of 300,000 reservists to fight in Ukraine, the testimonies of Russians fleeing their country so as not to fight are increasing.
On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, considered, in an interview with Politico, that the European Union must show “openness to those who do not want to be instrumentalized by the Kremlin.” .
“The European Union (should) welcome those who are in danger because of their political views. If in Russia people are in danger because of their political opinions, because they don’t follow this crazy decision of the Kremlin to trigger this war in Ukraine, this has to be taken into account,” he said.
Response to Ukraine advances
For the president of the Council, the European countries should “cooperate and (coordinate) very quickly because it is a new fact, this partial mobilization”.
This mobilization occurs when the Kremlin seeks the parade to the advances of the Ukrainian army that, with the strength of Western arms deliveries, claimed this Friday new territorial advances.
The mobilization of reservists represents a great organizational challenge, which requires summoning reservists to the four corners of an immense territory, equipping them, sending them to training centers and then to the front. However, the military intervention in Ukraine has brought to light significant difficulties in logistical terms, and analysts point to these shortcomings as one of the reasons that explain the difficulties encountered by the Russian troops since the beginning of the offensive.
