The Ukrainian army’s southern command said on Sunday that the explosion that occurred on Saturday at the port of Sevastopol, on the Crimean peninsula, was part of “preparations” for the expected counter-offensive by Kiev’s forces.
“This work is part of the preparations for the large-scale offensive that everyone has been waiting for.” said Southern Command spokeswoman Natalya Humenyuk, quoted by Ukrainian media and the Spanish news agency EFE.
This is reported by the Ukrainian secret serviceSaturday morning’s explosion, reportedly caused by a drone, destroyed ten tanks containing 40,000 tons of fuel destined for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, leaving no injuries.
According to Humenyuk, the attack on the port made the pro-Russian authorities of the occupied peninsula and Moscow feel that “the threat is real”, to the point that the families of the soldiers deployed there are removed from Crimea.
On Friday, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleskii Reznikov said preparations for the counter-offensive were “coming to an end” and President Volodymir Zelensky added that this attack would begin even if Kiev had not yet received fighter jets from its allies.
Also in the early hours of Friday, a Russian attack on several Ukrainian cities, including residential areas, left dozens dead. This attack was considered the worst attack in the past two months and was strongly condemned by the European Union.
