A global operation to combat illicit trade on the dark web has led to 288 arrests and the seizure of approximately €51 million in cash and virtual currencies, Europol announced on Tuesday.
“The authorities seized the illegal platform (…) ‘Monopoly Market’ and arrested 288 suspects of involvement in the purchase or sale of drugs on the ‘dark web’,” the European police said in a statement.
“Our coalition of authorities on three continents proves that we all do better when we work together,” said Europol Director Catherine De Bolle.
Operation ‘SpecTor’ was coordinated by Europol and involved nine countries, including the United States, Brazil and seven European countries.
850 kilograms of drugs and 117 firearms were also seized.
Other individuals behind the “dark web” accounts are still being investigated.
