Ukraine says it has shot down dozens of Iranian-made drones

Russia attacked Ukrainian territory with 26 Iranian-made “kamikaze drones” on Tuesday evening, but Ukraine’s anti-aircraft defenses shot down 21, the Ukrainian air force reported today on the Telegram platform.

Kamikaze or suicide drones are intended for single use: they carry explosives and are destroyed during the attack.

The drones were launched from Russia’s Bryansk region in northeastern Ukraine and the Sea of Azov in southeastern Ukraine.

Some of these drones targeted the capital Kiev, where anti-aircraft sirens were activated around midnight and the Ukrainian army managed to shoot down all drones that entered the airspace.

“The adversary’s tactics remain (…) unchanged: at nightfall, terrorists launch a wave of devices from different directions”said the head of the Kiev Military Administration, Sergii Popko, in his Telegram account.

With the help of air defense systems from Western allies, Ukraine can now shoot down most of the “kamikaze drones” used by Russia to destroy numerous Ukrainian energy infrastructures in the fall and winter.

According to some analysts, Russia continues to launch these cheap “drones” to force Ukraine to spend much more expensive missiles and other types of anti-aircraft munitions. Drone interceptions could also help Russia pinpoint defensive systems used by Ukraine.
