Buckingham Palace unveils Queen Elizabeth II’s headstone

It is the first depiction of the tombstone marking the eternal resting place of Queen Elizabeth II. A slab of black Belgian marble bearing the names of the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, and their parents, George VI and Elizabeth the Queen Mother, hand-carved in gilded copper, was placed on the floor of the King’s Memorial Chapel . VI, an annex to St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, where the four royals who were members of the Order of the Garter were buried.

The photo was released by Buckingham Palace this Saturday, five days after the Queen’s death, and shows the headstone surrounded by floral arrangements ahead of the reopening of Windsor Castle next week. Visitors can visit the site and pay tribute from September 29 and when Capela de São Jorge is open to the public, except on Sundays, which will be reserved for the faithful.

The reopening takes place 10 days after Isabel II was buried next to Prince Philip, who died 17 months ago. The King George VI Memorial Chapel was commissioned by the Queen to bury her father, originally buried in the Royal Vault, before being transferred to the chapel, which now also houses her.

Elizabeth II died on September 8, aged 96, after more than 70 years of reign.
