At least 27 missing in mine in Peru

At least 27 people are missing in Peru after a mine fire on Saturday apparently caused by a short circuit, the Arequipa regional government said in a statement.

The accident occurred at the Yanaquihua “Esperanza I” mine, in the province of Condesuyos, in Arequipa, in the early hours of this Saturday. A short circuit caused a fire inside the tunnel, putting the lives of the workers at risk.

The Peruvian government reported the accident on Saturday night and the number of fatalities is still unknown.

“Police personnel are in the Yanaquihua district to support the recovery of the bodies of the miners who died in a well in the province of Condesuyos, Arequipa,” the Ministry of the Interior reported on Twitter.

Local media indicated that, at the time of the short circuit, the personnel were working at a depth of 80 meters.

Three rescuers were injured.

The mine belongs to Yanaquihua SAC.
