A weapon registered in the name of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet Ugarte was seized in the southern Chilean city of Valdivia following a police operation that arrested 10 people linked to rival gangs involved in a shootout.

The incident occurred in the city of Valdivia, in the Los Ríos Region, 744 kilometers south of Santiago, when a group of young people exchanged shots before being detained by police officers.

Among the detainees was a 15-year-old teenager who was carrying a pistol in a bag and who was part of a drug trafficking organization.

The Public Ministry kept the detainee in custody after being identified as the perpetrator of the crime of illegally carrying a firearm, unjustified shooting on public roads, attempted homicide and minor damage.

The Chilean dictatorship lasted 17 years and left more than 40,000 victims, including those executed, detained and disappeared, political prisoners and tortured, according to data from the official commission that compiled testimonies from victims and their families.

More than 3,200 Chileans died at the hands of state agents.
