Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that a real war had been unleashed against Russia, guaranteeing victory and accusing the “West” of causing division, conflict and revolution in the world.
“Again, a real war has been unleashed against our Russia. But we will resist international terrorism and we will also defend the people of Donbass. [território anexado na Ucrânia] as well as we will guarantee our security,” Putin said in a speech to troops at a parade in Moscow’s Red Square.
This Tuesday, Russia celebrates Victory Day, which commemorates the European victory of the Allies over the regime of Nazi Germany, at the end of World War II, on May 8, 1945. In countries under the influence of the former Soviet Union, since 1967, Victory Day began to be celebrated on May 9, in reference to the day of the capitulation of the Nazi forces before the Soviet troops, and came to be considered a holiday.
