Fifteen children drowned and 25 others are missing after the boat they were traveling in sank in a river in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Sokoto on Tuesday, authorities announced.
“Fifteen bodies, 13 girls and two boys, were recovered by local rescue teams and buried in the village,” Shagari district administrative officer Aliyu Abubakar told French news agency France-Press (AFP). supervised the rescue operation.
Until Tuesday night, divers continued to search the river for the bodies of another 25 children who disappeared in the shipwreck, the same official added.
