Poland changes name Kaliningrad and Russia condemns ‘madness’

Poland has announced that it will change the name of the Russian city of Kaliningrad in official documents to Krolewiec, as it was known when it was ruled by the Kingdom of Poland in the 15th and 16th centuries, an act of “madness” according to Russia.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Warsaw wants to change the city’s name to Krolewiec, which was ceded by Germany to the Soviet Union after World War II and renamed Kaliningrad in 1946 in honor of Mikhail Kalinin, leader of the Bolshevik Revolution .

Mikhail Kalinin is associated with the Katyn massacre in 1940, when thousands of Polish military personnel were executed by Soviet troops. Therefore, it is now referred to as Krolewiec on Polish maps, based on the recommendation of the Government Commission on Overseas Geographical Names.

Reacting to the Polish decision, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was a “process bordering on madness” and a “hatred of Russians” and this renaming of Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave in the Baltic Sea bordering Lithuania and Poland, two EU – and NATO countries. .

“We know that Poland has fallen into this frenzy of hatred against Russians from time to time throughout history,” Dmitry Peskov said at a news conference.

The war in neighboring Ukraine has heightened historic tensions between Russia and Ukraine’s allied Poland, arming each other and prompting international support.

This Wednesday, Russian Ambassador to Poland Sergey Andreev was summoned to Poland’s Foreign Ministry over an incident last week in the Black Sea region involving a Russian fighter jet making dangerous maneuvers near an aircraft. European border and the coast guard.
