The head of a recruitment center in the Russian far eastern city of Ust-Ilimsk was shot dead in an attack on Monday and is in serious condition, Irkutsk region governor Igor Kobzev announced.
“In Ust-Ilimsk, a young man fired several shots at the recruitment office. Military Commissar (in charge of the office) Alexandr Vladimirovich Eliseyev is in intensive care and in a very serious condition,” the governor said on the Telegram social network.
“What happened does not enter my head. I am ashamed that this is happening at a time when we must be united. We must not fight each other, but against real threats,” said Kobzev, who ordered the measures to be taken. Security is tightened.
“I ask everyone to remain calm,” the governor emphasized.
Kobzev added that the shooter, whose identity he did not reveal, was detained by the police.
The Irkutsk investigation committee, quoted by the TASS news agency, indicated that an investigation has been opened against a 25-year-old detainee, also noting that “there is a team working on the spot.”
“The suspect is being questioned. The motives for the crime are being clarified,” the committee said.
