Inflation in France at 5.9% in April pressured by energy prices

The French Consumer Price Index (CPI) registered a year-on-year increase of 5.9% in April, due to the increase in energy prices, despite the slowdown in the growth of food prices, announced the National Institute of Statistics.

This indicator, which confirms the first estimate advanced by the National Institute of Statistics (INSEE), supposes an increase in the inflation rate of two tenths of a percentage point (pp) with respect to the previous month, since in March the CPI had risen from 5.7%

At the origin of this acceleration is energy, which increased by 6.8%, compared to 4.9% in March, with the rise, above all, in gasoline prices, while gas prices slowed down their growth up to 22.9%, compared to 35.6% in the previous month.

The prices of services, for their part, increased by 3.2% year-on-year, when in March they had registered a rise of 2.9%.

Core inflation, which does not include energy and food products, was 6.3% in April, one tenth higher than that registered in the previous month.

As for the IPCH (harmonized consumer price index), which allows comparison at a European level, it was 6.9% in April, two tenths more than the previous month.
