The head of European diplomacy announced this Friday that most member states agreed to end excessive “dependencies” on China, but rejected that the European Union (EU) is advancing towards economic protectionism.
“I can announce that the majority of the ministers liked the document we presented, with the general lines of the recalibration of our relationship with China. […]to do away with dependencies when they are too big and therefore a risk,” said Josep Borrell, at the end of an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Stockholm, Sweden.
The priority of the 27, said the High Representative for Foreign Affairs of the EU, must be to “balance the trade balance” with Beijing.
However, Josep Borrell assured that the European Union “is not moving towards protectionism”.
